CHAPTER THREE · THE SCENE · FIELD NOTE

The alternative music scene in Lagos: a field guide

Lagos has an alternative scene. It is real, it is documented, and it is scattered across house parties, festival line-ups, and a handful of rooms that will book loud, unfamiliar music. Nobody keeps the whole map in one place, so this page is the start of one: what the public record says, what we have stood in ourselves, and the difference clearly marked. Entries verified by attendance say so. Everything else carries its source.

The alte root system

The word Lagos gave the world is alte. It crystallized in the early-to-mid 2010s around DRB LasGidi affiliates like BOJ and TeeZee and boundary-pushers like Cruel Santino and Odunsi (The Engine), incubated on SoundCloud, Tumblr, and Twitter rather than on radio. Unruly's history of the movement traces how it grew into a national umbrella: swag rap to shoegaze, alt rock to electronic, artists coining genres like afrorage along the way, and the scene spreading to Abuja, Ibadan, Port Harcourt, and the diaspora. The big gathering points on record are the NATIVELAND and Homecoming festivals, plus the small-gig circuit and the house parties that never make a listing.

The rock and metal underground

Guitars have their own, older Lagos lineage. TRUE Africa has been inside the underground rock and metal scene, and Rolling Stone covered the resurgence through artists like Clayrocksu (Bianca Okorocha), a one-woman rock act who already had stages and awards to her name when Metal and Romance, the Lagos night dedicated to rock when almost nothing else was, invited her to join it. Today the torch is her own night: Rock Night, venue dynamic, moving show to show, guitars constant. Attendance-verified, because our own residents drunkgiantbird and Scandamile Mercury play and DJ it.

The gap, and what we are doing about it

One absence in all of the above is loud: nobody is programming the dark end of alternative (darkwave, post-punk, EBM, industrial, shoegaze at rave volume) as a recurring Lagos night. That absence is why Pandemonium exists, and its origin says everything about how this scene works: it began as the film shoot for Flotsam's Apology, drunkgiantbird's debut single, shoegaze shot in a warehouse, and the forty people who came for a music video refused to leave. Attendance-verified entries on this map so far: the rite itself, Lekki, door at ten, at least 70% Lagos on every line-up, and Rock Night above.

This page is a ledger, not an archive

Entries get added when someone from the congregation stands in the room, and each will carry its verification date. If you run a night, a room, or a collective that belongs on this map: door@pandemon.live. Argue with us. That is how the map gets true.
